The Metrolina Native American Association (MNAA) is currently accepting applications for its
2012 academic scholarships. MNAA is a Native American Community Association in
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It is a North Carolina State recognized Urban Indian
Center that was incorporated in January 1976 by local Native Americans as a non-profit
education advocacy group. The MNAA has grown to encompass child care, employment, and
aged-based community programs. It is the second oldest Urban Indian Center in North
Carolina. The organization serves over 22,00 Native American Communities residing in the
ten-county area of the Southern Piedmont referred to as "The Metrolina Area" (Catawba,
Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanley, and Union).
Each year MNAA awards academic scholarships in the amount of $500.00 to outstanding
high school seniors that meet the following criteria.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Active Membership with MNAA
2. Permanent address within the MNAA service area
3. Member of the state or federally recognized Native American tribe.
4. High School Diploma.
5. Acceptance to an Accredited college or university.
6. Demonstrate a desire and intent to fulfill a leadership role in your chosen field of study
and to a positive contributor to your Native American community.
7. Must not have received a MNAA scholarship before.
NECESSARY DOCUMENTS
1. Scholarship Application Form
2. An official high school transcript stating the successful completion of High School diploma.
3. Copy of college/University acceptance letter and/or registration information required before
scholarship is awarded
4. An essay on the topic of what you hope to accomplish in your field of study and how this
benefit you Native American community. In you essay please give specific examples to your
ideas. It should not exceed two pages ( 8 1/2" x 11", double-spaced).
DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION
All required documents including official transcripts must be received by the Committee listed
below no later than July 8, 2012. Recipients will be notified by first week of August, 2012. If
